There was a time when selling something required restraint.
A reason.
A line you did not cross.
Some things were understood to be off limits.
Privacy.
Dignity.
Intimacy.
Belief.
Money existed.
Markets existed.
But not everything was a product.
Somewhere along the way, the boundary dissolved.
Not loudly.
Not suddenly.
But persistently enough that nothing felt sacred for long.
Selling stopped being transactional.
It became cultural.
Back Then: When Not Everything Had a Price
You remember when value felt earned.
Work led to pay.
Skill led to trust.
Reputation led to opportunity.
Advertising existed, but it respected distance.
You were informed, not followed.
Persuaded, not profiled.
People built careers before brands.
Lives before platforms.
Meaning before monetization.
Attention was not currency.
Privacy was not leverage.
Identity was not inventory.
There were things you shared with friends.
Things you shared with family.
And things you kept to yourself.The line mattered.
And most people honored it.
When the Blur Began
Then the platforms arrived.
Sharing became rewarded.
Visibility became valuable.
Exposure became opportunity.
The message was subtle but constant.
If you do not monetize it, someone else will.
If you do not sell it, you are wasting it.
Life became content.
Personality became brand.
Belief became positioning.
People started selling access.
Selling intimacy.
Selling outrage.
Selling authenticity itself.
Nothing was too personal.
Nothing was too private.
Nothing was too sacred to package.
The market did not force this shift.
It invited it.
And we accepted.
The Gray Area We Live In
We tell ourselves this is empowerment.
That people finally own their voice.
That monetization equals freedom.
But ownership without boundaries becomes exposure.
When everything is for sale, value flattens.
Depth becomes optional.
Integrity becomes negotiable.
People no longer ask if something should be shared.
They ask if it will perform.
Pain becomes content.
Trauma becomes currency.
Belief becomes branding.
We reward oversharing.
We punish privacy.
We confuse visibility with worth.
The line between expression and exploitation disappeared.
Not because people wanted to sell their soul.
But because the market paid well for pieces of it.
The Mirror That Finally Turned Back On Us
We blame platforms for commodifying life.
We blame capitalism for corruption.
We blame influencers for excess.
But the truth is uncomfortable.
We clicked.
We followed.
We shared.
We paid attention.
We taught the market what to buy.
The economy did not invent this appetite.
It responded to it.
Selling became moral because survival felt expensive.
Privacy felt like a luxury.
Restraint felt like a disadvantage.
When everything becomes negotiable, nothing remains protected.
The sale of values did not start with greed.
It started with insecurity.
